Bookpost
I’m stuck at home with the world’s most boring dose of the flu, I’ve a slight fever, a slight stuffy nose, and slight sore throat, a slight headache, and leaving the house makes everything worse - so, not going to work, not taking the dog out much, not exercising, but not sick enough to be tired at night. This is my second night with insomnia, I stayed up all Sunday night and finally got to bed around midday yesterday. I aim for 6am today. So, time to catch up with what I’ve been reading lately. I’m going to go backwards, just because. ( Read more... )And tonight’s topic for burbling is: Enough with YA already! SF has been swept with YA books lately, they are all that people talk about, all that people nominate, I’m at the stage that if a review contains the word ‘enchanting’ I put the book on my Do Not Read list. I admit (and have admitted for years) that I read for escape, but it’s not something to be proud of for fuck’s sake! I just get embarrassed hearing about other people delighting in their inner child. Rushing off on a tangent now, but I think that this kind of contrived delight, especially among western women who are old enough to know better, will be one of the things that will come to characterise our age. Oddly enough, that and the kind of attitude that considers us as far more worldly-wise than our grandparents, because, you know, we don’t get horrified meeting homosexuals.* Ignoring that maybe the wars that they have seen might maybe count as experiences of the real world that we haven’t had.** And then I get a creepy feeling, because these two characteristics, if you like, could also be applied to society in the early part of the twentieth century before the First World War changed everything. And then I try not to think about the very big, very insane country two hundred kilometres away from me, and the kind of things that are happening in the Caucasus region all the time. One really interesting thing is that if you watch post-War films (especially Finnish ones, the Finns had a horrible time in WW2) they are mostly light-hearted bits of fluff, singing and dancing, people speaking very properly to camera. They have happy endings, the ‘baddies’ aren’t very bad, and they just make the audience smile. They’re the equivalent of YA novels, and the opposite of the kind of gritty realism that is popular in film now. And we judge the audiences who watched those films as inferior to us, because this is what they have left us. And we forget that they’ve had enough of gritty reality shoved in their faces, and they were looking for entertainment to forget. Right! Enough lecturing and pontificating. Time to post, read the web, and maybe go to bed at some point soon... * It makes us more liberal, and more tolerant, which are good things, but we have more time and money and can afford to be tolerant. I just really hope that this survives into the future. I’m depressing myself now. ** No, I’m sorry, wars fought against countries that have not one single hope of taking over your homeland do not compare to conscription, rationing, and the just outright fighting in the streets and cities that Current Mood: awakeCurrent Music: The Format - Holly Jolly Christmas |

Hidarime Tantei EYE SP
This drama SP was really good! Now I'm highly looking forward to the drama next season! Yamada Ryosuke plays Tanaka Ainosuke whose brother donated the cornea of his left eye to his little brother, since he'd been almost almost blind in that eye from childhood. Ainosuke is a budding artist while brother Yumehito (Yokoyama Yu) was a scientist, so Yumehito felt his brother would benefit more of good sight in both eyes than he would. Soon after the surgery, Ainosuke's brother dies in mysterious circumstances. The police are convinced it was an accident, but Ainosuke is determined to look into if further. Especially after he starts getting visions on his left every time he's been punched by someone. These visions show him mysterious scenes of some kinds of a crimes that might have something to do with his brother's death. He is helped by the ditzy school nurse (Ishihara Satomi) who is in major debt after shopping for all kinds of brand name goods. The promise of (reward) money and Ainosuke's visions of suitcases full of money immediately make her interested in following the boy around... There are various crimes and some nice twists, and the end of the SP is what really made me look forward to the full season drama. Another thing is that I like Yamada Ryosuke's acting. He's much too young for me to fangirl over, but I've seen him in a few dramas/drama SPs and think he shows a lot of promise as an actor. He needs to get rid of that Johnny's catwalk strut whenever he's walking, but otherwise he's doing fine :). ( Some major spoilers for the SP. Really! ) Current Music: Hey! Say! Notification System
**FINAL EDIT Thu Dec 10 02:15:47 UTC 2009** So there is the final update... Over the past day we have processed around 11 million jobs out of the 12 million that were in queue at that time. Please bear in mind that over this past day, more jobs for notifications are also created. So while the queue has been dropping, we are still not fully caught up at this point, due to backlog and new jobs. We have roughly 3 million jobs still pending that involve the notification system in some manner. We had hoped we could have fully cleared the queue in a day, but unfortunately we can't clear it too quickly, since we need the rest of the site to operate normally. From our current perspective on the amount of jobs that are left in queue, and how many it has processed thus far, we believe it will take around another 8 - 12 hours to process everything. And finally some answers to some questions: ( Read More and Get Some Answers... ) Current Mood: grumpy |

Yummy!!!!
We were supposed to do these yesterday, but never got around to it. But since the pastry dough was already unfrozen, I had to use it today. My sister's recipe: 1 package of pastry dough/puff pastry dough (voitakina, don't know the correct English term, picked this from an online translator) rolled thin spread a thin layer of Sweet Thai Chili Sauce on the dough sprinkle on some basil sprinkle on some grated cheese (+ some Blue cheese if you like it) Roll the dough into a roll (either one way or starting from both sides) and cut the roll into about 1 cm slices. Place on a baking sheet. Bake in about 225˚C until nicely brown. Current Music: SS501 - 하루만 | Powered by Last.fm |

MogileFS Maintenance
**EDIT Thu Dec 3 23:24:15 UTC 2009 ** Hey Everyone, we are about to run the last alter job that we need to on our database servers. This will effect userpics / scrapbook / vgift images for the next few hours. Have no fear, your images aren't lost, there is just a really intensive process running on the servers which store the information for mogilefs. Thank you for your understanding and all the LJ love... Hey LJers, I just wanted to let you all know that we are going to be performing some mogilefs maintenance over the next few days. We will be upgrading our current version to latest stable as well as changing some db config information to better handle the amount of files we are currently hosting. This shouldn't cause a big impact on site stability, but you may see some minor delays with userpic / scrapbook images appearing or other requests associated with our mogilefs. We would love to not have that happen, but unfortunately with some of the steps we need to take we have to cause a delay with images. I figured this was a better solution than taking down all of LiveJournal because well lets face it, we all need our daily LJ fix ;) Thanks, Current Mood: dirtyCurrent Music: Bad Religion - Stranger Than Fiction |

Monday night in Grenoble
I'm traveling again, this time in Grenoble, France (and noticed I'd neglected to post anything from Frankfurt in June and Chicago in September). I got here today, first flying from Turku to Helsinki to Geneva, and then renting a car from there to here. Driving was a bit of an adventure (but luckily not too much so) as it was snowing, and the car of course had summer tires. Didn't see much of the Alps with the clouds hanging so low, but every once in a while got a glimpse of snow-covered mountains just beside the motorway (the road tolls were a total of 15 € this way, BTW). My rental car is a crappy Ford Fiesta with a 1.25 l petrol engine that cannot maintain a steady 110 km/h in top gear with two passengers going up a very slight incline - I had to downshift so the car revved at 4000 RPM to be able to maintain this pace. After arriving at the STMicroelectronics office in Grenoble, we went for lunch in the cafeteria. Today's courses included tuna cooked Chinese style (about 2,50 €), white sausages (1,80 €), and I took an excellent ostrich steak, which was the most expensive course today at 3,79 € ( Edit: I found out later the company subsidizes lunch by roughly 2,90 €, but even 6,70 € for that lunch was cheap, and the rest of the week was even better). In the evening, I took a stroll downtown to find that all the shops had closed by 19:30 at the latest, but had a hamburger with fondue(!) cheese for supper. In unrelated news, the hotel seems to be blocking my domain. Well, that's an easy obstacle to avoid: I just SSH home and use the proxy there. |

Fan(girl) Service If I remember correctly there are some on my friends list who are… shall we say fond of Richard Armitage. He will be on Spooks ( Erikoisjoukkue) season seven which begins on MTV3 today. So if you haven’t been watching that yet (you should be anyway, it’s a quality spy show) you might want to check him it out. |

I came home a little while ago from my niece's 7th birthday party. Her actual birthday was a couple of weeks ago, but since she and her brother had the flu when they were supposed to have the party, it was postponed until now. It was fun, but tiring (6 children ranging from 3 to 7-8 year olds were present). Since it is actually my sister's real birthday today, she wasn't present. My mother had given her theatre tickets as a present, so my brother-in-law handled everything :). I gave Ronja a couple of My Littlest Pets thingies, plus I'd burned her a couple of CDs. In addition to Lady GaGa and Shakira, I made her a special dance mix of catchy earwormy songs from Japan, Korea, and India. And since it's a unique collection made just for her, it's something special that only she has :). P.S. If anybody's interested in knowing what is in the special Ronja-Mix, here is the tracklist :): ( Read more... ) Current Music: 이정현 - Vogue Girl | Powered by Last.fm |
